The Most Common Causes Of Boiler Breakdowns

There are many different causes for boiler breakdowns, but here are just a few of the most common ones:

1. Frozen Condensate Pipes

Newer, condensating boilers have what's called a "condensating pipe" at the back, which, if not properly insulated, can become frozen during the colder months. If this happens, your boiler will either stop working altogether or you will get a warning light on your boiler's control panel.

2.Loss of Boiler Pressure

Sometimes boilers can have water leaks and this can lead to a loss of pressure in your boiler. You can also get a lowering of pressure if your pressure release valve needs replacing. You should check your boiler for obvious water leaks and then call us. Don't try to fix the problem yourself. Issues like this should always be dealt with by a qualified, Gas Safe engineer.

3. An Inaccurate Thermostat

Sometimes your boiler may not produce enough heat for your home. In this case, it's possible that your thermostat is the problem and may have lost accuracy over time.  The options here are to buy a newer, more energy efficient thermostat or have us recalibrate your existing thermostat.

4. The Pilot Light Goes Out

There are many reasons for pilot lights to go out, but they do shut off to prevent an explosive build up of gas in some cases, which can be caused by leaking pipes. If you smell gas or your pilot light goes out, you should call us immediately rather than attempting to relight it yourself. We can then safely fix the problem and get you back up and running again.

5. Your Boiler's Making Noises

This is generally caused by air being in the heating system. It may not cause a breakdown straight away, if at all, but it will cause your heating system to become less efficient. We can clear your system of air and debris and get you back up and running efficiently.
